A Gentle Introduction to SQL

Prerequisites:
To participate in this workshop, an attendee will need to:

1. Have the MySQL RDBMS on their laptop. Detailed instructions on installing MySQL will be provided in advance of the workshop.
2. Have the MySQL data-migration add-on installed in their copy of Microsoft Excel 2010 or later. Detailed instructions on installing the MySQL Excel add-on will be provided in advance of the workshop.
3. Have Microsoft Excel 2010 or later on their laptop.
4. Have an Excel spreadsheet that contains the sample data for the workshop on their laptop. This file will be uploaded to a free online file-sharing service; access instructions will be provided in advance of the workshop.
5. Understand the meaning and significance of fields commonly present in student enrollment data, such as IPEDS race categories, gender, school, academic program, cumulative GPA, and citizenship status.
6. No programming experience is required to participate in the workshop. Attendees will not be expected to have any experience in machine languages, data migration, or using online programming-related resources.
7. No experience using MySQL or the MySQL Excel add-on is necessary or expected.
 
*Please note: in order for the workshop to begin on time and cover all material as described, participants are expected to arrive at the workshop with all software and supplemental materials pre-loaded on to their laptops.

Description:
This workshop will provide attendees with a basic, hands-on introduction to using SQL and the freely-available MySQL Workbench database management program. The workshop is specifically intended for IR professionals with limited or no programming experience. Attendees will learn the uses, strengths, and limitations of SQL, migrate data from Excel into the MySQL database management program, learn and practice basic SQL commands, and be introduced to free online resources that will allow them to develop their skills after the workshop has concluded. The workshop will emphasize real-world SQL applications for common IR tasks and demonstrate how the freely-available MySQL program can enhance the accuracy, transparency, and speed of an IR office's analysis and reporting while saving time and money.
 
Intended Learning Outcomes
Participants in this workshop will:

1. Learn the context, applications, strengths, and limitations of working with SQL.
2. Learn to install and customize a free SQL data management program, MySQL.
3. Practice moving data from Excel files into MySQL and organizing data within the SQL engine.
4. Learn and perform basic SQL queries and alterations on a sample dataset.
5. Review free resources available online to improve their knowledge of SQL after the workshop has concluded.
